Mr. Sweat is a member of the regulatory compliance and commercial litigation groups of the firm. He has represented clients on a wide variety of legal matters, and has extensive experience in the hospitality, clean energy, and financial services industries. He is licensed to practice in all state and federal courts of Texas and Louisiana.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Sweat spent two years as the Compliance Director of a solar energy company, handling regulatory compliance matters and commercial litigation for the organizations' multi-state operations. Before his time in-house, Mr. Sweat was an attorney at a national firm in Dallas, Texas where he focused his practice on regulatory compliance and commercial litigation. His clients included Fortune 500 companies and mid-sized businesses, primarily in the hospitality, financial services, and equipment sales and servicing industries. Also while in Dallas, Mr. Sweat was recognized by Texas Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in Business Litigation for 2015.
Mr. Sweat's regulatory compliance experience includes advising clients on privacy issues, ADA regulations, building codes, licensing, antitrust prevention and evaluation, trademark protection, products and premises liability risk mitigation, criminal and general nuisance abatement, labor and employment regulations, price gouging, and marketing and advertising regulations - particularly those related to green products and technologies. Mr. Sweat also regularly advises clients on all manner of state and federal consumer protection laws, and assists clients in responding to inquiries from local, state, and federal regulators.
Mr. Sweat has also represented private equity investors, commercial lenders, borrowers, and startups in performing regulatory due diligence and creating effective compliance programs. He has also acted as outside general counsel to small and mid-sized businesses, providing advice on the numerous areas of legal concerns that affect day-to-day operations and risk management.
Mr. Sweat has successfully tried dozens of cases as a solo or first chair litigator. His litigation experience is focused on commercial litigation, including breach of contract actions, trade secret violations, breaches of non-compete agreements, minority shareholder oppression cases, fraud, tortious interference, data breaches, vendor/supplier disputes, franchise litigation, lien foreclosures, real estate title disputes, and commercial evictions. Mr. Sweat also has significant experience defending parties in consumer class actions and arbitrations, and has represented manufacturing and equipment servicing companies in multi-million dollar catastrophic personal injury claims.
Mr. Sweat was born in DeRidder, Louisiana, obtained both his B.A. in Political Science and Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University, and currently resides in New Orleans with his wife and two children.
